Strict cleanliness is essential to avoid transmission of coccidia through animal feces. It is imperative that all excrement be eliminated. How does ammonia kill coccidia?

The oocysts of coccidia are notoriously tough to eradicate! Around the oocysts, there is a hard, impenetrable wall. Despite the extreme conditions, the oocysts are able to survive longer because of the walls' ability to withstand them.

Oocysts are able to withstand a wide range of chemicals and temperatures, but they are unable to withstand dehydration or extreme temperatures. Three ways to clean for coccidia, including cleaning techniques and products are listed here for reference.

Heat – Steam Cleaning, Boiling Water and Dry Heat

This is the best and most eco-friendly way to get rid of coccidia. If your bearded dragon has a coccidial illness, steam cleaning its habitat and accessories is an excellent way to get rid of it and keep it clean in the future.

The steam wand must be moved carefully and deliberately around the walls of the cage, starting at the top and working its way below. To ensure maximum heat, the wand will be in close proximity to the walls.

Boiling water can be used to sterilize dishes and other small items. Let them cool down in the water for a while before removing them.

It's possible that your bearded dragon's accessories could benefit from a trip to the oven. The oocysts are harmed by the oven's high temperature and dry air. Everything you put in the oven must be able to withstand the heat and pose no danger to yourself.

As long as the temperature is above 40°C (104°F), the oocysts of coccidia can be inactivated or killed (Constable, n.d.). When exposed to temperatures between 45 and 60 degrees Celsius over a period of 5 to 9 minutes, Cryptosporidia oocysts become inactive (Cranfield et al, as cited in Pasmans et al, 2008). Heat tolerance varies among species, as does the length of time it must be applied. For this reason, working with steam or boiling water is preferable to working with a lower temperature.

Boiling water reaches a temperature of 100°C (212°F). With steam cleaners, the wand will need to be virtually in direct contact with the wall in order to reach that temperature. The wand can be used to test the steam's temperature by waving it over a thermometer.

Cleaning products to treat coccidia.

There are only a few options for getting rid of coccidia when cleaning. Use a 10% ammonium hydroxide solution and let it sit for at least 45 minutes on the areas to be cleaned. Using bleach while cleaning for coccidia is not recommended. Coccidia can't be killed by using bleach (Divers & Mader, 2005).

Common disinfectants are ineffective against oocysts because of their hardened outer shells. Some compounds, however, can pass through the wall's microscopic pores, which are necessary for the passage of oxygen. In the end, you don't want to have any of those chemicals in your home.

Coccidia oocysts can be penetrated by ammonia hydroxide, one of the cleaning agents. All amounts of ammonia hydroxide can be obtained by adding water to ammonia. It's possible you've heard of hazy ammonia, a mixture of ammonia and soap. There is no use in using hazy ammonia.

At least 10% ammonia hydroxide should be purchased. Higher quantities can be diluted to get the desired cleaning concentration of 10%.

Many household cleaning products contain ammonia, which is very alkaline, caustic, and suffocating to the lungs. Be cautious and follow the manufacturer's directions before using, no matter how popular it is. Ammonia is unpleasant and can induce throat and respiratory system irritation if inhaled. It is also capable of causing skin and eye irritation, as well as burns at high concentrations.

Most bacteria can't be cleaned with ammonia hydroxide, although oocysts can be cleaned with it. The final step in the cleaning process is to use a disinfectant such as F10 and dry the surfaces before returning everything to its original location.

UV – Sunlight

Do oocysts of Coccidia die in the sun? No particular investigations have been done on Isospora amphiboluri, a strain of coccidia that kills when exposed to direct sunlight.

Some strains of coccidia were once indicated to be controlled by exposure to sunlight, hot water, and steam, a century ago (Wilson, 1930). The University of New Mexico Biology Department also recognized the efficiency of sunlight in destroying Eimeria oocysts (Department of Biology at University of New Mexico, n.d.). Similarly, Long (Long, 1982) refers to the oocysts of Isospora as being quickly destroyed if they are dried out and exposed to direct sunlight.

As a result, direct sunlight should be used as part of a coccidia cleaning regimen. The sun is a good and viable alternative for drying accessories. Use it as a supplement, not as a substitute for coccidia control. It has two drawbacks when used on its own:

  • Variables such as the surface exposure of things, exposure time, and so on all play a role.

Although direct sunshine can help boost your bearded dragon's immune system, it's also a good idea to take it outside to get some fresh air.

Sunlight will not be able to successfully treat any accessories with crevices or surfaces that shield oocysts. If you find oocysts on the surface, make sure there is nothing between the sun and the oocysts. UV rays will not be impeded by any shade, glass, or other things.

Does bleach kill coccidiosis?

One-celled protozoa are the cause of coccidiosis, an intestinal infection. In the absence of Bleach, the only other option is to kill coccidia with a 10 percent ammonia solution; however, ammonia cannot be used when the dogs are around; therefore, you must remove the puppy and clean somewhere else.
