I believe we can all agree that life is hectic, and the urge to unwind from time to time is becoming increasingly important. We're approaching Easter as I write this, which is traditionally a time of reflection for many Christians around the world. What better way to recharge your batteries than to organize your own spiritual retreat?
You don't have to spend the weekend in a retreat center. You don't even need to get out of your house. I'll offer you some examples of what I do that you can tweak to fit your needs and lifestyle.
Before I begin, I want you to know that these spiritual retreat ideas are based on my personal experience as a Christian and follower of Jesus. I've used them all my life and frequently include elements into my regular creative getaways.
How to Take a Spiritual Retreat
Get away to a peaceful location. This could indicate one of two things. You can get up early than anyone else in your house (which, in my view, means quiet!) Alternatively, you may take a stroll or drive to a more peaceful location. For spiritual retreats, I recommend staying away from coffee shops and other places where you can be distracted. Consider where you may go to incorporate nature into your vacation. Many people find nature to be relaxing. (A park, a wildlife preserve, a secluded stretch of beach, etc.)
Bring a few things, but don't overdo it. All you'll probably need is a Bible, a notebook, a pen, some water, a snack, and a devotional to guide you. If you bring too many things, you may spend the entire time sorting through them rather of thinking and praying. (Ahem, based on personal experience.)
I have a question. This question may arise during your initial reading, but it's always a good idea to enter a retreat with a notion or question in mind. What exactly do you require right now? What do you hope to gain knowledge about?
Even if it's only a rudimentary building, it's beneficial to have some structure in your hideaway. You want to feel invigorated and revived at the end of your retreat, not rushed and frustrated because you got sidetracked.
- Allow time for the words to sink in and keep a record about them. You can also use index cards to put down specific verses that you want to remember.
What are the activities in retreat?
Before we get into the 11 dynamic activities, let's take a look at one important mentality component. Something that you can use as a starting point when planning your next company retreat or corporate function.
Keep in mind that this is a company retreat. You want to bring people together, have a good time, get out of the office, and ensure that everyone has a pleasant experience.
It's critical to plan activities that encourage inclusion (particularly among people who don't often work together).
A Note About Remote Teams …
Remote teams are being used by an increasing number of firms to conduct critical company operations.

How do you prepare for a spiritual retreat?

You've just signed up for a wellness retreat and are undoubtedly ecstatic! A health retreat has the potential to revolutionize one's life because there is so much to gain in terms of personal growth, physical and mental restoration, and limitless discovery.
I've witnessed that transition myself, having previously led a number of overseas retreats. With an open and prepared mind, anything is possible.

Whether you're going on a general wellness retreat, a yoga, fitness, nature, or meditation retreat, the following packing lists will help you mentally and physically prepare for your health retreat ahead.
Bootcamp lessons, fitness courses, and/or yoga may all be part of a fitness retreat. You can either learn some new routines and exercises to take home with you, or you can go on a comprehensive wellness transformation. Here's everything you'll need for a fitness wellness retreat:
Meditation Wellness Retreat
You do nothing but sit there all day. It sounds simple, and all you need is the floor, right? No, not at all. Make sure you're packing the following items for a meditation retreat:

Spiritual disciplines are practices that are intended to help people change their lives. Their goal is to help us grow spiritually as Christ's disciples and improve our relationship with God. They're similar to spiritual training activities. However, just like any other form of exercise, we must choose to perform it on a regular basis in order to feel or see the benefits. So, what are these practices, exactly? Consider the following lists from two of the most influential publications on the subject from the twentieth century:
Dallas Willard's The Spirit of the Disciplines: Understanding How God Changes Lives
- Abstinence disciplines include seclusion, silence, fasting, frugality, chastity, confidentiality, and sacrifice.
- Study, worship, celebration, service, prayer, fellowship, confession, and submission are the disciplines of engagement.
As you can see, there are a variety of ways to structure these lists of spiritual disciplines, as well as which disciplines are included. So, how did these practices come to be? Because they've endured the test of time, the majority of them are considered spiritual disciplines. Finally, Christians have decided to incorporate these disciplines into their spiritual lives because they are practices that Jesus himself practiced or taught about, according to the Bible.

Practice Spiritual Wellness
When it comes to spiritual wellness, it's vital to identify the strategy and approach that works best for you; unlike the other dimensions of wellness, there is no “one size fits all” solution.

How do you make a retreat fun?
Remember that your team is diverse, and some of them may have fascinating hobbies or gadgets that they would be eager to bring along to improve the retreat experience. Host a welcome party

Our all-hands meeting, which is equal parts pep rally and essential business updates, kicks off our first full retreat day. Our CEO discusses the company's current state and future plans, while team leaders give big-picture updates on what their teams have been up to and where they're headed.
Row, row, row your boat
There's a good chance that wherever you go, there'll be a body of water nearby and an outfit ready to rent out kayaks, stand-up paddleboards, canoes, surfboards, or other equipment for getting out on the water and seeing things from a different perspective.
Explore a new city together on foot
Walking meetings allow for more in-depth conversations and interactions. We've visited museums and gone on art walking tours, and we always manage to find time to wander about aimlessly.
Make time for team time
It is vital that each team has time set aside to discuss and plan for the future. Face-to-face time is much more vital for distant teams. Even if your company is co-located, dedicated team time outside of the office is still a vital opportunity to brainstorm in fresh settings and generate new ideas.

We also try to schedule time for cross-functional collaboration, such as when the Product, Engineering, and Design teams meet in a room to discuss the product roadmap, or when the Marketing and Customers teams meet to discuss the types of companies that sign up for Help Scout and how we can best communicate with them.
Share a meal
Breaking bread with your teammates is a terrific way to get to know one another. We divide team members into appointed, cross-team dinner groups at least a couple of evenings during the retreat to ensure that everyone meets and mingles.

While we've planned everything from tequila tastings to brewery tours (and it's normal for teammates to grab a drink once the day is done), make sure these activities are always optional and that non-drinkers have plenty of other entertaining options!
We designate a few people to make 30-minute talks on areas about which they are extremely informed before the retreat. From the art of negotiation to how to have uncomfortable discussions to our branding, these deep dives have covered it everything. The presentations teach us something new and throw a spotlight on team members in a unique way that is difficult to replicate once we return to our regular routine.
Break a sweat
It's excellent to blow off steam on the court (or the golf course, or a climbing wall whatever your team is into!) after sitting in meeting rooms for a portion of the day (especially when it's nice outside!).
Get your birds of a feather together
We offer specific Slack channels for various affinity groups at Help Scout, such as women, LGBTQ+, people of color, and so on. So organizing time for those people to visit one other in person, develop community, and encourage one another at our corporate getaways is fantastic.
Power through the queue
What happens to your customer service if your entire company is on vacation in the Caribbean? If you're anything like us, you make dealing with the support queue a team effort! We call it âSupport Power Hour,â and it's something we include in our retreat planning. We even set up a space for it and jump right in to assist our customer service representatives. Bottom line: Include the entire organization in planning for customer service coverage during your company retreat.
Break the ice
We prefer to have everyone participate in an icebreaker game on the first or second day of the retreat â last time, we made Bingo-type cards with personal information like âspeaks three or more languagesâ or âhas a pet that isnât a cat or dog.â It's a great way to get everyone's legs moving and start some intriguing talks! Go on a âlistening walkâ
We all teamed up to go on a listening walk outside the hotel after a deep dive talk about active listening at one retreat. The instructions were to go for a 15-minute walk and then take turns discussing for seven minutes about a period when we had received negative criticism. The listener's only ability to speak was to offer clarifying questions. It was an eye-opening exercise and a terrific way to practice active listening before returning home and putting it to use at work.
Have an adventure
Check out the local choices ahead of time â are there any challenge courses nearby? Ziplining? Excursions for snorkeling? Scavenger hunts, escape rooms, or other team-building activities? The Airbnb Experiences platform is a great way to see what's available.
Get your nails did
If a full day of pampering isn't in the cards (or the money), a group trip to the manicure salon can be a great way to unwind, network, and look and feel great!
A group of us happened onto a karaoke night during our first retreat. What should have been a tense evening turned out to be both amusing and charming, not to mention the fact that we discovered we have teammates with major pipes! Karaoke has now become a favorite element of our retreat ritual (at least for some of us we know it isn't for everyone!).
Share warm fuzzies
We have a special channel in Slack, like many other workplaces, where anyone can express a compliment about another teammate, work-related or not â we call it #WarmFuzzy. We did it open-mic style the first time we shared warm fuzzies at the retreat. People are now asked to write praises for their team members on cards, which are then distributed to the proper recipients. (It gives everyone a bit more time to think and prevents them from feeling rushed.) Many people give beautiful shoutouts to folks who aren't on their own teams, highlighting the power of a week of bonding on cross-team culture.
Because corporate retreats are often held only once a year, it is critical to capture those memories in order to encourage your staff throughout the year.
