Itachi Uchiha and Kisame of Akatsuki subsequently use hypnosis to entice Jiraiya away from Naruto in order to capture him; while this works at first, Jiraiya quickly realizes that ladies aren't normally attracted to him, allowing him to return to Naruto in time to save him. He spied on Tsunade when she was bathing when he was younger, and when she discovered him, she punished him by breaking both of his arms, six of his ribs, and rupturing a number of organs. Since then, he's been more circumspect in expressing his feelings for Tsunade, making sure that his advances are merely fun. Jiraiya considers one of his greatest failings in life to be his inability to win Tsunade's love. Despite his outgoing personality, Jiraiya was plagued by doubts and insecurities that his life had been nothing but a sequence of misfortunes. The fact that he was unable to save Orochimaru, as well as the deaths of his sensei, the Third Hokage, and his student, the Fourth Hokage, weighed heavily on him. Despite his self-deprecation, Jiraiya's tenacious spirit and determination to never give up was one of his defining characteristics. Despite his numerous failures in life, he never gave up, constantly forging ahead like a shinobi must. Jiraiya revealed his conviction that the truest nature of a shinobi was one who lasted and fought on regardless of inborn aptitude or genius in his fight against Orochimaru. Jiraiya's willpower was so strong that he willed his own heart to begin beating again in order to deliver a final message to Konoha and, more crucially, Naruto, even though he was gravely wounded.
