What is a guru initiation?

Diksha (Sanskrit: in Devanagari), sometimes written diksa, deeksha, or deeksa in common usage, is the giving of a mantra or an initiation by the guru (in Guru–shishya tradition) of Indian faiths such as Hinduism, Buddhism, and Jainism. Diksa is bestowed in a one-on-one ceremony and usually entails the acceptance of a serious spiritual discipline. The word is derived from the Sanskrit roots d (“to give”) and ki (“to demolish”), or from the verb root dk (“to destroy”) (“to consecrate”). When the guru's and disciple's minds become one, we say the disciple has been initiated by the guru. “The process of bestowing divyam jnanam (transcendental, spiritual knowledge) and destroying sin (ppa), the germ of sin and ignorance, is called diksha by spiritual beings who have seen the Truth (desikais tattva-kovidaih,” says Vishnu Yamala (tantra).

Different sects and traditions approach diksa in different ways.
