Understand that spiritual rest is less about organized religion and more about your own personal relationship with the world around you and your place in it for those of us who have a tumultuous relationship with religion.
A few spiritual activities that fulfill the spiritual rest requirement:
Affirmations operate by reaching deep into the core of your identity. Consider them cosmic nudges, sending you the appropriate message at the perfect time. Reading and chanting affirmations has been shown to have a favorable effect on the mind, allowing you to perform more effectively. Each of our 52 affirmations sends a message of self-love, confidence, and optimism to you, which is ideal for times you can't give it to yourself.
Recently I decided to get back to my genealogical work and finish bringing together my family tree as far back as I could go. Being Black, however, means that my search often leads to dead ends, which is more annoying than instructive. But I keep going because it forces me to think about two things: 1) the lives of those who came before me, and 2) how their decisions shaped where I am now. By elucidating your link with your ancestors, you'll be able to see your place in the larger scheme of things.
Walking a walk may not appear to be a spiritual exercise, yet it does help us to connect with the natural world. Seeing the leaves change, the wind blow, the rain fall…all of these things bring us closer to the soil and ground us in a sacred sense. Sitting on the veranda and meditating as it rains is one of my favorite spiritual practices.
Many of us make an effort not to cry. When we hold back our tears, though, we are physically hindering our bodies from functioning properly. Researchers have researched several sorts tears and discovered their molecular composition is different when you're slicing onions versus weeping in sadness. Within the sad, hurt, furious tears, the body generates stress hormones and its own kind of painkillers. It has the ability to heal you. I'm not sure what else to call that if that isn't a spiritual practice!
Connecting with like-minded people around a common topic or interest is the epitome of connection and sanctity. Find some virtual or socially distant (I'm serious – it's still a pandemic) ways to communicate with people. This could be anything as easy as weekly check-in sessions, or it could be something more involved like Bible study.
How do you take a spiritual rest?
Spiritual relaxation does not need to consume your entire day. Here are some spiritually peaceful practices that I've discovered to be beneficial and that you can conduct on a regular basis:
Spend some time praying.
People who pray regularly are less likely to become physically or mentally ill, according to several studies conducted at Duke, Dartmouth, and Yale colleges.
If you've never tried prayer before, Paul E. Miller's book A Praying Life is a great place to start.
When you don't know what to pray, the Book of Common Prayer can be a good starting point.
Consider Scripture or a personal mantra as you meditate.
Making a deep focus or focussing your thoughts on something is what meditation is all about.
Read a scripture or phrase numerous times.
Consider the meanings of the words.
Declare it aloud.
Put it up on your wall.
Make a mental note of it.
All of these things are part of the meditation process.
If you're unsure where to begin, the Bible's Psalms are always a wonderful place to start.
Spend time in prayer and worship.
Worship is acknowledging God's importance in our lives. Spend time thanking God for what he has made, the people in your life, or the things you have been given. Tell God how magnificent he is. Sing and/or listen to music that help you to see things in a fresh light.
Spend time in the great outdoors. You may have noticed that spending time in nature frequently appears on lists of ways to relax. I am a firm believer in the importance of nature in maintaining a healthy spirit. Nature has its own set of resting rhythms. I'd even go so far as to claim that spending time in nature on a regular basis will provide actual spiritual rest.
What the Bible says about spiritual rest?
And God blessed and declared the seventh day holy, since it was the day when He took a break from all of His creation activity.
Keep the Sabbath holy by remembering to keep it holy. Every week, you have six days off for regular labor, but the seventh day is a Sabbath day of rest dedicated to the Lord your God.
I will lie down and sleep in peace, for You alone, O LORD, have made me to dwell in safety.
He brings me beside still waters and makes me lie down in green pastures. For the sake of His name, He restores my soul and leads me down the ways of righteousness.
My soul finds rest only in God; he is the source of my salvation. He is my salvation and my rock; he is my fortress, and I will never be shaken.
My flesh and heart may fail, but God is my heart's strength and my everlasting portion.
Whoever stays in the Most High's shelter will slumber in the Almighty's shadow.
Those who build the house will work in vain unless the Lord builds it. The guard keeps watch in vain unless the Lord guards the city. You wake early and go late to sleep, eating the bread of anxious toil; because he provides sleep to his beloved.
Keep wisdom and understanding in your sights, as well as sound judgment and prudence; they will be life for you, as well as a necklace to adorn your neck. Then you can continue on your journey without fear of stumbling. You will not be afraid when you lie down; your sleep will be beautiful when you lie down.
The fear of the LORD brings life, allowing one to sleep well, free of evil.
He gives the weak more power and gives vigor to the tired. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who put their trust in the LORD will be strengthened. They will fly like eagles; they will run and not tire, and they will walk without fainting.
“Stand by the roads and look, and inquire for the ancient routes, where the right way is; and walk in it, and your souls will find peace,” says the LORD.
What is the biblical meaning of rest?
“Peace, ease, or refreshment” is how rest is defined. Rest is highly regarded in the Bible. It's found all over the Bible, starting with the genesis tale in Genesis 1 and 2. We can see that God worked for six days straight before taking a day off on the seventh. It wasn't because he was fatigued or anything, it was to create an example for humans to follow. What's more bizarre is that we learn about Moses receiving the 10 Commandments from God in the book of Exodus, and one of the commandments is about rest. Do you have any idea what those are?
What are the 7 types of rest?
Physical, cerebral, emotional, spiritual, social, sensory, and creative rest are the seven types of rest that you require. To assist lessen the rest deficit, each one demands different activities.
What is the rest of God?
“All who toil and are burdened, come to me, and I will give you rest. Take up my yoke and learn from me, because I am gentle and humble in heart, and your souls will find rest. My yoke is light, and my burden is easy.”
I used to stay up until all hours of the night in college. Games on the computer. Tabletop games are fun to play. Having a good time with pals. I always paid the price the next day (see my GPA), but I never learnt my lesson. I was usually exhausted.
I'm a different type of exhausted and weary now that I'm an adult with my own kids (and dogs). I'm still awake when I shouldn't be, but it's to see what the noise was or to think about all the things I said that I shouldn't have spoken.
The kind of relaxation that can help you recover from this kind of exhaustion is actually rather easy to come by. The key is to get more sleep. You're welcome; my bill will be mailed to you shortly.
But that isn't the whole of what Jesus talked about. That was something I didn't realize for far too long. If I'm being honest, I had no idea what God's rest included. What am I taking a break from? I still have obligations, such as children, a job, and a life.
Thankfully, the author of Hebrews led me in the right direction. The rest of God is the focus of Hebrews 4. We discover that God's rest is divided into two halves. When we believe in Christ's accomplished work on the cross, we first enter God's rest.
When we believe and are saved, we enter God's rest, but the final consummation of God's rest occurs when Christ returns. Then we'll finally comprehend what it's like to rest in God's presence!
“Whoever has entered God's rest has likewise rested from his efforts, just as God has rested from his.”
There you have it. We rest from our labour when we enter God's rest, just as God did from His. We take a break from attempting to earn our way to paradise, which is exhausting, pointless, and unpleasant work. We take a break from the constant effort to prove our righteousness before God. Believing in Christ as our Lord and Savior means admitting that we are all sinners who can do nothing to earn our salvation. We can cease trying when we enter God's rest.
What a breath of fresh air! I don't know about you, but attempting to please God all of the time exhausts me. It's such a relief to know that He already approves of us! Knowing that takes a load off our shoulders, allowing us to work to bring Him honor, knowing that whatever tiny effort we can muster is already agreeable to Him!
What is divine rest?
All-Around, welcome to the month of Divine Rest. Rest can be defined as sinking into something and allowing it to support you. As you may have noticed, the best and most comfortable location for a small child to relax is on their parent's chest.
How is rest important?
The month of April is designated as National Mental Health Awareness Month. With the stress of the COVID-19 pandemic weighing heavily on individuals in recent months, it's more critical than ever to promote mental health resources and daily routines that promote physical, mental, and emotional well-being.
Even in the absence of a pandemic, Americans are anxious. Around 33% of respondents say they are extremely stressed, and up to 73% say stress has a negative influence on their mental health.
Rest is essential for mental health, greater focus and memory, a stronger immune system, less stress, a better mood, and even a faster metabolism.
Importance of relaxation, rest and sleep
So many Americans are bogged down by work, family obligations, and chronic stress. We often allow ourselves to genuinely rest only during vacations or holidays. It is, nonetheless, critical to prioritize appropriate rest and quality sleep in your daily life. Rest and sleep are two distinct things, but both are essential for your mental, emotional, and physical well-being. Prioritizing rest can also improve the quality of your sleep.
Rest is difficult to define because it can mean different things to different people. Any behavior that aims to improve one's bodily or mental well-being is referred to as rest. It might be active, like taking a walk outside, or passive, like sitting for 10 minutes and breathing deeply. These regular habits can help you recuperate and recharge from physical and mental exertion, regardless of how you choose to rest. As a result, getting more rest is connected to improved physical and mental health.
Sleep, on the other hand, is a body-mind condition in which people become detached from their environment. Sleep is a vital bodily function that affects every system in the body, from cognitive function to immune health. Sleep can assist us in resetting, recovering, and recharging. It is critical for brain function, memory, focus, immunity, and metabolism. Sleep, unlike relaxation, is a must for your body to function. In fact, if you don't get enough sleep, your body will push you to sleep, no matter what you're doing.
Rest and relaxation tips
Long-term stress can lead to chest pain, headaches, digestive problems, anxiety, depression, changes in sexual desire, and inability to focus if left untreated. It may not appear that skipping relaxation in your daily routine is a big deal. Daily rest and relaxation, on the other hand, has a number of advantages:
So, how can you make rest a higher priority? Look for modest methods to include rest and relaxation into your everyday schedule. Every day, we schedule time to eat, send our children to school, run errands, and go to work. What makes you think that rest is any different? Begin by identifying a relaxing technique that suits you. This could be meditation, yoga, strolling outside, listening to music, reading a book, or bathing, or any combination of these activities. Find a consistent time to rest when arranging your daily schedule. Take a calming bath before night, meditate every morning, or go for a brief stroll during your lunch break at work, for example.
Tips for getting better sleep
Adults should obtain seven to eight hours of sleep each night, in addition to daily rest and relaxation, but quality is just as important as quantity. The most restorative of the five sleep periods is rapid eye movement (REM). The REM cycle should account for at least a quarter of your sleep.
How can you make sure you get enough good sleep every night? Here are some pointers.
- Swap screen time for a soothing activity like reading, nighttime yoga, or a relaxing bath at least one hour before bedtime.
If you're having trouble sleeping or don't feel refreshed during the day, you could benefit from a sleep study at INTEGRIS Health Sleep Disorders Center of Oklahoma.
