First, let's discuss magma. Magma is a mixture of several substances, including molten rock (liquid), tiny crystals (solids), and various gases (water vapour, carbon dioxide, sulphur). Minerals begin to develop out of the molten rock as it cools, as well as crystallizing on top of existing mineral crystals.

Minerals are made up of chemical compounds known as elements. Certain suitable elements tend to enter the first minerals that form as magma cools. Silicon, iron, magnesium, aluminum, potassium, and calcium are examples of compatible elements. They form rock-forming minerals such as quartz, feldspars, pyroxene, amphibole, olivine, and micas by bonding together. 99 percent of the Earth's crust is made up of these commonplace minerals.

As the magma cools more, some elements refuse to join the rock, remaining in the magma with the gases until the final end. Strange elements including zirconium, niobium, uranium, cesium, lithium, and rare-earth elements are referred to as “incompatible” elements.

Incompatible components include water, carbon dioxide, and other gases. Because of their size and/or charge, incompatible elements are left behind in the magma and are rejected by rock-forming minerals. They only become minerals at the latter end of the crystallization process.

Mineralogists adore elements that are incompatible with one another. Why? Due to the fact that they are rare mineral species—the

Nepheline, aegirine (pyroxene), and feldspar crystallized first as the magma that created the phonolite at the Aris quarry cooled. The gases in the lava were allowed to escape and form gas + liquid bubbles as it cooled and solidified. Minerals crystallized within the bubble, or hollow, after that.

When the cavity is cracked open millions of years later, the gas and liquids within it have mostly been used up, and the cavity is dry. When the magma cooled, it appears that not all of the liquid in the hollow was used up, according to the phonolite samples we have from the Aris quarry.

We cracked a number of rocks apart using a huge rock splitter to reveal their liquid-filled holes. Mineralogists don't usually dance in their labs, but if someone had come near the prep lab on this day, they would have believed there was a party going on. Opening up a cavity to uncover water is extremely rare—more rare than finding a needle in a haystack, in fact—and should be celebrated!

We were able to capture the liquid and put it into glass vials for further analysis by introducing a syringe into the hollow.

Is this the magma's primordial “water,” dating back 34 million years? Is it possible that surface water soaked into the rock and filled the cavities? The real work begins now, with the analysis of the liquid's chemistry and the discovery of its sources. If it is indeed 34 million years old, the resulting publication will undoubtedly be a watershed moment in history. The results will be available soon!
