Kundalini
There must be a greater source of energy for the chakras to function than the physical body can offer. Kundalini or snake power plays this role and is dormant in the subliminal body. Not only is Kundalini not a physical force, but it is also not an energy that can be controlled by oneself. It is the concentrated energy of attention that is Kundalini. The sushumna or central channel must be filled with prana or life force before the kundalini may be awakened. When the prana is disengaged from its fixation on the external world, this results in a state of equanimity. Our life force cannot be withdrawn into the central channel as long as it is associated with the physical body and its functions. As a result, entering a samadhi state while trying to awaken kundalini and open the chakras is a necessary step. It begins with a trance-like state in which we lose awareness of our actual body. Even in the waking state, it can be done without any bodily harm, but the physical body is no longer perceived as one's actual identity at that point.
