Is being an empath a power?

If you're an empath, you could believe you've been cursed in some way. The truth is that empathy is a gift, and you have the potential to transform it into a force unlike any other.

  • Recognize your empathic nature. Compassion is your calling if you're an empath. Since birth, you've been programmed to be the planet's light anchor. The first step toward letting your inner light shine is acknowledging that you came here to achieve this. In my book, Dodging Energy Vampires: An Empath's Guide to Avoiding Relationships That Drain You and Recovering Your Health and Power, you'll learn more about your empathic nature.
  • Have faith in your instincts. You are extremely sensitive as an empath. Learning to trust yourself and the information you receive will help you avoid energy vampires and discover positive, healthy connections, whether you can read people's minds, see psychic visions, pick up on odors, or detect a feeling in your stomach.
  • Playing the victim isn't a good idea. Empaths frequently lack self-esteem. Your urge to be adored can eventually morph into a victim mindset. This is frequent in spiritual partnerships, when the guru ends up taking all of the resources while the devotees lose their self-esteem, money, and other resources.
  • Define your limits. Once you've figured out who your energy vampires are, put a time restriction on how much time you spend with them. Take note of how you feel while with them and how you feel afterward. You'll soon be able to walk away for good and reclaim your valuable energy. You'll also have a lot more free time to do something you enjoy.
  • Meditate. Empaths require downtime to re-energize. Empaths can benefit from meditation, which takes only a few minutes. The 3 Minute Heart Meditation by Judith Orloff, M.D., for example, might help you feel more centered in your heart energy. When you're experiencing sensory overload, this is a terrific way to reclaim your power. You don't have to sit to meditate, though. Spend time in nature or visualize yourself in a safe bubble where only light can pass through but dark energy cannot. Repeat this process multiple times a day.
  • Breathe. Create a breathing practice in which you simply sit and breathe consciously. Consider the words “clarity” and “power” while you inhale. Consider breathing out bad energy as you exhale. “I am breathing in strength,” you can even say. I'm exhaling my anxiety and negativity.” Do this multiple times a day to relieve any stress that has built up in your body.
  • Negative energy must be transformed. As empaths, we pick up a lot of negative energy from the people around us. Use techniques to convert negative energy in real time. Bring plants into your workstation, for example, to assist absorb negative energy. Crystals, which are natural energy modulators, are another option. Surround yourself with things that are beautiful. In a difficult scenario, try to communicate positively. When feasible, find the comedy in a situation to help shift negative energy. Another thing you can do to boost your positive energy is to start each day with a gratitude affirmation.
  • Take care of yourself. Your life's goal as an empath is to look after oneself. It's the only thing you're supposed to do! Self-empathy is the ability to listen to one's own ideas and emotions. Every day, set aside some time to recognize your emotions and accept your sensitivities. Recognize that you can be vulnerable while also being strong. Every time you follow your instincts or accomplish something that makes you happier, stronger, or healthier, give yourself a pat on the back. Remember that when you reach your greatest potential, you have the power to change the lives of others.

You will be able to enjoy enormous joy if you fully embrace your sensitive nature. On a deeper level, you will perceive the broader image — one that is full of beauty. In addition, by linking directly with Source, you will be able to replenish your own energy cup.

Do empaths have anxiety?

While there is a lot of study on empathy, there are just a few studies that specifically look at empaths. According to research findings, empaths are likely to have hyper-responsive mirror neurons, which are a type of brain cell that triggers responses like compassion. This enables someone to be particularly sensitive to the electromagnetic fields generated by a person's brain and heart, as well as to infer the emotions felt by those around them. The energy of a raucous crowd or a group of sad people can be felt deep within an empath's body.

Introverted empaths may be more sensitive to the brain chemical dopamine, which is responsible for feelings of pleasure. When there is too much stimuli, an empath can become overwhelmed. Empaths can be programmed to avoid or require very little external stimulus to feel pleased over time. Exhaustion, overload, despair, and anxiety are all common side effects of hypersensitivity, whether or not a person is introverted. When these feelings come, it's often beneficial to have a quiet room at home or a favorite outdoor spot where you can recover.

Empaths who are overwhelmed by intense emotions may experience anxiety, panic attacks, despair, and weariness, as well as bodily symptoms like a racing heart and a headache. This is because they internalize other people's sentiments and pain without being able to tell them apart from their own. Empaths should try to separate their own thoughts and feelings from those of others as much as possible to help them cope with these overwhelming periods.
