On the junction of Western and Fifth Streets, Cafe Jack, a fast-casual Asian fusion restaurant, is crowded with Korean millennials. No one is sitting at a table despite a wide menu on display and the strong aroma of pig roasting on the grill. There doesn't appear to be much of a hunger among the guests. There is a little space in the back of the restaurant where all of the guests' attention is focused. Psychics from Korea are inside, reading fortunes and giving guidance to clients.
According to Nak Jung Kim, director of the Los Angeles Korean Cultural Center: “That's how shamans operate in the 21st century.” Fortune tellers are what they are.
Saju, or fortune telling, is an integral part of Korean culture, originating in the old tribal religions of the country's indigenous peoples. Predicting someone's future is similar to laying up a road map for the rest of their life. Scholars and historians call it “Shamanism,” and it's still going strong in the twenty-first century.
A professor of East Asian History and Cultures at USC, Kyung Moon Hwang, remarked, “It's prevalent throughout Korea.” “Local shamans can be found in back alleys and on the streets of even the smallest towns and villages. There is no exception to this rule among the Los Angeles Korean community.”
No matter what your religious allegiance, Koreans are incredibly spiritual. Only 15 percent of South Koreans claim to be nonreligious, according to a 2016 report by the South Korean National Statistics Office. Despite this, 56 percent of South Koreans have no formal religious affiliation. Many Koreans who do not join in a religious institution rely on shamans to meet their spiritual requirements.

In a way that is unique to Korean culture, fortune telling sessions with shamans are steeped in spirituality and mysticism. Traditions on the Korean peninsula date back thousands of years to the basis of these rites. During my psychic reading with the restaurant's owner, Jack Pak, I witnessed this firsthand. This area is filled with golden shrines and elephant statues, both of which are emblems of wealth and wisdom in Korea. The entire area is filled with a strong scent of incense. At a table in the middle, Pak is hurriedly chatting to another client on the phone. You wouldn't realize he was a fortune teller if you ran across him on the street. Despite the tarot cards and patterned tablecloth, he appears to be dressed casually. My translator and I are greeted in Korean by Pak after he hangs off the phone. We converse totally in his own language during our meeting.
I pay Pak $80 in cash for the ritual, and he discusses the ritual's history and the philosophy he utilizes to read people. My birthdate, year, time, and location will serve as the foundation for our session. This is where I'll find out what's going to happen to me.
Pak wants to know what my birthday pillars are. My birth date is March 4, 1996, and he hands me a Korean-language birth certificate. Pak takes a breath and looks at me with a curious grin. The stillness is a pleasant experience.
Finally, he replies, “You've had a good fortune,” and smiles. You have a lot to look forward to, I promise you.
Information concerning my own life will fill the next seventy minutes. Everything from our personality traits to our job path to our romantic relationships is discussed. With such broad strokes as a foundation, Pak's reading begins. First, I get the impression that he's looking up information about me on some random astrology website. There is a lot more going on as the session goes. He thinks I'll be married and have two daughters by the time I'm 32 years old.
I'll have a powerful job in my 30s, wonderful health until old age, and more money than I can imagine in the future, thanks to this session. Pak, on the other hand, isn't afraid of a challenge. If I want a steady connection with a woman, I'll have to wait till I'm married. We leave our meeting on a sour tone.
A few incense sticks are lighted by Pak as he tells the students that they are on a good path, but no one's destiny is set in stone. What if you deviate from the path? Your life could change dramatically.
Professor Hwang says it's usual for people to leave their sessions with Pak thinking about all of their distinguishing personality traits.
There is a lot of psychology involved, Hwang explained. “Aside from reading the future, these so-called “psychics” can also assist you de-stress. If you're sick and don't know how to heal yourself, you can turn to a fortune teller in the hopes that they can help… These sessions often result in a sense of relief for the participants.”
When Koreans' confidence in the traditional religion of their parents begins to wane, these contemplative thoughts become increasingly appealing to the younger generation. A 21-year-old daughter of Protestant immigrants, Sooji Nam hails from South Korea. In spite of the fact that she does not adhere to her parents' faith, she still attends fortune tellers.
According to Nam, he's been to two or three. “Several of my friends regularly consult fortune tellers. It's a terrific way to express your spirituality and perceive a deeper significance in your life, but you have to take it with a grain of salt.”
A group of Korean kids in line at Cafe Jack tells me the same thing. Of the six persons I spoke to, just one of them still attends church. They're solely interested in fortune telling as a form of spiritual counseling.
Fortune-telling sessions are popular with young adults because they provide “psychological stimulation,” Hwang added. Due to the fact that they have their entire life ahead of them, the advise is especially alluring.
Shamanic practitioners aren't simply popular with millennials. All ages are welcome at Pak's.
There's no difference whether or not someone is religious, Nam remarked. “So they travel to see what their future holds, whether they'll be happy or rich, since they are spiritual. You won't find these solutions in church.”
How do you make a paper fortune teller?

Under the flaps, write the fortunes you'd want to read. Open up the 1 and 2 triangles and write a brief proverb beneath each of the corresponding numbers. In order to make the most of the available space, keep your writing to a minimum. To get a total of eight fortunes, repeat the method for each number behind the flap. Finish writing all the fortunes, then close the flaps.
STEP 6: Use the fortune teller by sliding your fingertips under the squares. Ask a friend to help you pick a color and write the color's name in the correct order.
