The book of Revelation is an apocalyptic prophecy with an epistolary preface written to seven churches in the Roman province of Asia. The term “apocalypse” refers to the revelation of heavenly mysteries; John is to write down what he sees in his vision and send it to the seven churches. The letter is the complete book; the letters to the seven specific churches serve as introductions to the rest of the book, which is addressed to all seven churches. While apocalyptic is the major genre, the author identifies himself as a Christian prophet: Revelation uses the word twenty-one times in various forms, more than any other New Testament book.
