When the printing press hadn't yet been invented, it cost a lot of money to commission what was basically a large number of tiny paintings.
These early tarot cards, known as tarocchi in Italian, included suits, trumps, and even pips, much like any other deck.
When Frenchman Jean-Baptise Alliette produced the first complete guide to reading tarot cards, it was the late 1700s that tarot cards became widely used for divination. Pseudonymed Etteilla, he published a deck of cards and a guide to its use. Incorporating concepts about astronomy and the four elements, he gave each card its own meaning. The Egyptian deity of wisdom, Thoth, is said to have penned the Book of Thoth, an ancient Egyptian scripture.
He gave each of the cards a deeper meaning by combining ideas from astronomy and the elements into his interpretations.
For the first time in history, Etteilla assigned a definite order and spread to the cards in both directionsa system that is being utilized today. In 1791, he issued a revised edition of his book and established himself as the first professional tarot reader in the world.
In 1909, tarot cards underwent a substantial overhaul. Tarot reader A. E. Waite designed the Rider-Waite deck, which is still in use today and whose pictures you've probably seen. There was also an Etteilla-like printed guide for the Rider-Waite deck, which explained what each card meant. When the cards in this deck were arranged in a certain order, the intricate pictures on the cards conveyed a tale. In the 1970s, a reissue and modification of the Rider-Waite Tarot Deck and a new guidebook by Stephen Kaplan sparked a new craze for tarot cards.

There are numerous reasons why you might want to cleanse your cards, and there are numerous methods for doing so.
Different ways to cleanse your tarot deck
Use the sacred smoke. Inhale the aroma of dried herbs such as rosemary, lavender, cedar and sage before extinguishing it with a snuffer. Hold the smoke a safe distance below the deck with the burning herbs in one hand and the cards in the other, so the smoke rises onto the cards. Turn the deck over so that the smoke covers all sides. Then you may securely put your deck down and put out the embers.
The deck should be adorned with a selenite stone (black tourmaline or clear quartz). Let it sit overnight, although an hour would be OK.
Subsequent to a New Moon, set them out to dry. You can purify the deck under the new moon by putting it on a window sill on a new moon night and letting it sit there for a few hours. This is also a good moment to create a new goal for your deck.
In a basin of salt, put the cards. One of the best ways to purify the body is to use salt. When it comes to a serious detox, this is the best option for me. You can leave it in a dry spot for up to 8 hours, but keep an eye out for dampness.
A frantic, chaotic movement. Mix the cards like you're a child playing with muck on the floor. Using this strategy is an excellent way to reset yourself.
